The Terminator (1984)

THE TERMINATOR
DIRECTED BY: JAMES CAMERON
WRITTEN BY: JAMES CAMERON & GALE ANNE HURD
OVERALL SCORE: 10/10
TOP 100 FILMS: #85

When a string of Sarah Connors is killed, the last one remaining in the phone book (Linda Hamilton) must team up with the mysterious Kyle Reese (Michael Biehn), in order to escape an unstoppable killing machine (Arnold Schwarzenegger). Why is he after her? Because her unborn son will one day lead the resistance and save the human race.

Really, I feel almost as if I'm underminining all my reader's intelligence by putting up the plot for The Terminator, I'm sure you've all seen it, and if you haven't... I disown you (not really but you should stop reading now and go get it). It's hard for me to decide between Terminator and T2, ranking up there was one of the best 1-2 punches in film history. Terminator though, has just something dark, special, and not quite as cheesy about it that makes me jump through walls to see it when it's on tv.

Terminator by most accounts is a film that launched a thousand careers, including that of director James Cameron, and bit part player Bill Paxton. As well Terminator inspired the minds of countless generations combining mystery, science fiction, and a powerhouse of action that keeps you on the edge of your seat. There's something about the Terminator series, even with the last two installments failing to inspire, the first two are just so incredible you forget how bad recent attempts have been. It's like the Godfather, it takes a truly strong series to survive bad films, and Terminator laid a groundwork for excellence that few series have even come close to attaining.

Perhaps the definitive 80's action film, The Terminator is as classic as they come.
