The Monday Corner 5/2/2011

A day of jubilation and reflection for not just Americans, but people around the world. What we do next may just be one of the most important decisions we will ever make. My thoughts and prayers go out to all those who have spent these long years in sadness, and hope this somehow brings the closure some so desperately need.

Movie Watched This Past Week:

Taming of the Shrew - mostly watched it because I know Andrew of Encore Entertainment loves it. Was incredibly fun watching Richard Burton in a performance where he was more buffoonish. He absolutely nailed it.

Holiday - If you were to double feature this with You Can't Take it With You, it would be an exercise in mental restitution you would not soon forget. Great life lessons through the medium of cheesy romantic comedies.

Where Eagles Dare - Oh my god this movie was fun! From the "don't mind my over the top American accent, it's exactly like your German" to the unabashed final half which was basically every action cliche wrapped into a single nonstop basket. Oh, I could have died and gone to blockbuster heaven.

For your Consideration:
The following links are brought to you in part by Detrol.... gah I knew I should have said no to advertising on this blog!

A lot of people to congratulate this week, and not nearly enough time to do it all in. Well, first up is Aiden of Cut the Crap Movie Reviews who unveiled a big announcement the other day and we here at LiE would like to wish him the very best of luck!

Cinema Romantico made my 900th post spectacular look like a tiny pebble in a sea of boulders when they crashed ashore this past week with their 1000th post! A look at one of their favorite, and mine as well, films Boogie Nights to cap off the celebration.

A special excitement reverberated throughout me when I saw that This Guy Over Here has a book entitled 100 Films of the Aughties coming out soon!

It's Hot Docs time and nobody - sorry my fellow bloggers - has got the scoop quite like Mad Hatter over at Dark of the Matinee. With multiple posts and special one on one interviews, it's coverage any movie lover can get behind.

In a rather unfortunate way the world works, if you mention anything negative about violence in movies and video games everybody instantly ignores you - or worse yet, insults you in a very violent and angry rage (not recognizing the irony). Therefore I like to support people who take up the call of looking at how our obsession - yes, obsession - with violence plays a part in our moral code of conduct. Thus, I give you Max's Anomalous Material article for this week.

Poll Update:
I really seem to be along on a lot of the issues I bring up with these polls. Oh well, angry man on the porch at 30 here I come!

Results: Are You Tired of Superhero Movies Yet?
1. 13 votes: Love Some, Hate Some, and eh on the rest (but going forward you still think that will sustain?)
2. (tie) 5 votes: No, I live for superhero movies (...I put this one here as a joke, didn't think people would actually choose it *sad*) and They're better than most else that comes out of Hollywood (they are most else that comes out of Hollywood)
4. 4 votes: Buying my time for a female superhero to come along (so playing Mariah Carey's Hero in my head right now... and I'm sorry that you now have it stuck in your head)
5. 3 votes: I've finally reached my limit (call me in twelve months and I'll likely be there several times over)
6. 2 votes: Hated them from the get go (well they are all roughly the same story, so I can see that)

New Poll: In honor of doing a poll none superhero related in the week of a major superhero film release, I have something else I want to know: How often do you go to an independently owned theater?

Soundtrack of the Week:
This week I give you the brief, but effective score to one of the best indie films of the 2000s, let alone one of the best films of the decade in general: Mean Creek.

So there you have it ladies and gents. Another Monday Corner in the bag. Oh, and be sure to tune in Wednesday for another special post but for this one I'm expecting a lot of the same statement lavished over me as if I had somehow accomplished something in so achieving it. Have a great Monday!

@AlexJ Being the best of the Fast and the Furious series is a bit like being the most intelligent man in a game of russian roulette.

@Mad Hey, just because I'm southern doesn't mean you get to go hamming this up with your junk!

@Castor It fits the movie perfectly - if you haven't seen it, I recommend it.

I discovered upon waking up that my generation has officially replaced 'U!S!A!' with 'America FUCK YEAH!' I'm so proud of us sometimes.
