Obligatory DVD Release Post 10/19/2010

Excuse me, but I'd like to steal a moment here away from DVD's to help plug a form of entertainment of another kind. Fellow film lover, blogger, and all around great guy, Alex J. Cavanaugh is celebrating a day many of us hope to one day experience. The official publication, and release, of his very first novel - CassaStar. A sci-fi adventure space opera book about a young pilot named Byron.

So, if you have a moment, head on over to his blog at AlexJCavanaugh.blogspot.com and show your support!

New Releases:

Predators: No sir, I can't kill you now, it would make for a very boring movie. Instead I'd rather you run around a lot on my planet, so that I can see how many odd situations I can put you in. Hopefully, if all goes well, we'll be able to sneak in a Laurence Fishburne cameo! Who knows, we may even have a samurai sword fight! Don't worry though, this is nothing like the original Predator at all. We have Topher Grace.... and Adrien Brody. I rest my case.

Agora: Rachel Weisz + Movie = Uni There. It's a time tested system that has never failed. Perhaps I shouldn't crush on her, but I can't help it. I think we're all allowed at least one performer crush. She's mine. Alas, away I go!

Please Give: I'm not sure how quick I'll be to check this one out, but I must say I like the talent involved. Hall, Platt, Keener, and Peet might sound like the making of some odd country dish, but I like what they've done (granted, each has their head banging, please god no! film).

Other Releases: Holy Rollers (Eisenberg + Bartha = ?), Giallo (is Brody becoming king of the straight to DVD racket?), Oceans (water + Disney = @?), Night of the Demons (No lollipops please)

Other Goodies:

Moulin Rouge! (Blu-Ray): If I really have to explain this to you, I feel bad for you. This movie is every ounce of awesome, and I can imagine blu-ray doing it a great service. Also, Luhrman's Romeo + Juliet comes out on Blu-Ray this week.

Apocalypse Now (Special Edition Blu-Ray): One of those classics that is awesome to the nth degree, makes me kind of wish I was a filmmaker.

Seven Samurai (Criterion Blu-Ray): If any of you are thinking "hmmm, I wonder what I should get Uni for Christmas?" - allow me to give you a big *HINT HINT*.

Psycho (50th Anniversary Blu-Ray Edition): Oh, Norman, that wig looks so lovely on you in high definition!

Alrighty, ladies and gents, have at it!

I saw Agora before you so I call dibs on crushing on Rachel Weisz.

Thanks for the mention! Me and the Predators - wonder who'll win?

And Rachel is hot in my book, too.

I was so disappointed with Predators, such a boring movie. Nothing like the original indeed. I might give Please Give a shot, given the cast.

Apocalypse Now (Special Edition Blu-Ray) is competing with my wallet over A Thin Red Line blu-ray. Criterions are making me sad theyre so expensive :(

I liked Predators, maybe because I am partial to Adrien Brody. The original wasn't really all that much better :X

Years ago I thought I had the APOCALYPSE NOW base covered when I picked up "The Complete Dossier" version that included both the 1979 cut and The Redux.

But then I noticed that this new version also includes the documentary HEARTS OF DARKNESS which shows just how out of control the making of this film got and how close this whole thing came to disaster.

Hence, it's my pick of the week.

@Andrew NO!!! Back off!

@AlexJ No problem, and while I'd like to be supportive I wouldn't get my hopes up if I was you. It's hard to turn down Adrien Brody abs.

@Castor I watched it, not sure if I'll review it. I think it tried to be a bit too much like the original, but not all that bad.

@Japan I concur, the best thing to do is wait until Barnes and Nobles does one of their 1/2 off on all Criterion dvds.

@Sugary Well, you have two options: 1) Get a job (yuck) or 2) Team up with me and we'll create a DVD crime syndicate.

@Mad I have the Complete Dossier for Apoc Now as well, and I'm beginning to think they're always holding something back. Either that or they're horrid at english and don't fully understand the word "complete"

Nope, Giallo's getting pulled because Brody didn't get paid. Or something.

God, this week is boring. And my idiot sister didn't seal the Netflix case right, and now we have to pay for her goddamn Harry Potter disc before we can get anymore. It was supposed to be my week, too. Fucking bitch.

ANYWAY!

Wasn't a huge "Please Give" fan.

Ooh, I didn't know you love Baz Luhrmann films. I want Moulin Rouge and Romeo + Juliet on Blu-ray for Christmas, thankyouplease :)

@Simon I decree you should enact the "mental damages" clause of all sibling agreements, and request 2 weeks for your films. 1 week for the one you lost + an additional one for the emotional strain.

@Sugary KK, you pick out the costumes, I'll stake out the joints (always wanted to say that)

@Danny I've heard a lot of meh from it, but I figure it might be worth a shot.

@filmgeek Oh definitely a big Baz Luhrmann fan. Not a huge fan of Australia but I was among the few who quite enjoyed it.
