Obligatory DVD Release Post 8/24/2010

I have to be honest when I say I have almost no desire to do this post today. The stuff being released today, I couldn't honestly fake much interest in. So, I'm going to take some time to do some self plugging:

Thursday: The Film Enigma, Episode 3.
Featuring: Fletch (Blog Cabins) vs. Kaiderman (The List)
Be sure to tune in!

New Releases

The Back Up Plan: Yes, ladies and gentlemen, this is the week's big, highlight, release. A movie that made under $80million worldwide, less than $40m domestically, and really only appeals to the most loyal of Rom-Com fans. Then again, I think we've well established that so far Hollywood has done quite a crap job with their marketing this year. Overselling their crap, underselling their gems, and leaving everyone to go: WHY!!!!!!

Dorian Gray: I've always been fascinated by the Dorian Gray character, but I don't have much hope for this, even with Colin Firth co-starring. Why? Well Ben Barnes still hasn't proven to me he can act. See - Prince Caspian. That doesn't mean I wont' check it out. It just means I probably won't for a very long time.

Abandoned: The final film of Brittany Murphy. Never a happy time to see such a young starlet's final film, let alone one that gets dumped on DVD in the middle of August. Yet Hollywood has a long history of fine actors getting falling upon Made for TV and DVD movies in their final years. The couple of early reviews I've read haven't been much kinder either. Oh well, here's hoping that Something Wicked, her other unreleased film, fairs better.

Other Releases: City Island, Bad Mother's Handbook, The Square

Some Goodies:

Withnail and I (blu-ray): To be honest, this isn't a movie I'd call a Blu-Ray must buy. I think it's a must watch, but hardly the kind of movie that'll be brought to life in great detail on the Blu-Ray platform. If anything I'd argue it's the kind of movie best watched on a 10 year old VHS. That kind of dark, scratchy, atmosphere suits it perfectly. Oh well.

The Long Good Friday (blu-ray): If you're into British Gangster films, be sure to check out one of the godfathers of the genre. With delightful performances from Bob Hoskins and Helen Mirren, it's quite an amazing film. And to be honest, the only one of this week's releases I'd even bother trying.

For those venturing out to pick up DVD's today I only say: Good luck. How about giving the old bargain bin another shot?

Good to hear Dorian Gray is finally coming out in America, since I've been waiting on that one for about a year! I don't know about Ben Barnes's acting skills but daaaaaang is he attractive, and I'm just shallow enough to focus on that.

I may have to give "Dorian Gray" a watch sometime, as well, although word is it's terrible. I'm a huge fan of Albert Lewin's 1945 film and the Oscar Wilde novel.

Or do a wild, hairy search through NetFlix!

My vote once agin is to stray from the new release wall and wander into those middle aisles - grab something you passed over in the last few years.

Withnail & I is good because of the cheap film, dude. What's Blu-Ray going to do for it?

I liked Barnes in Bigga Then Ben, anyway. Holding out hope.

Actually I think that low budget films shot on grainy stocks look the best on blu-ray because it more accurately captures the look of film. Lots of people complain about grain on their blu-rays but for me it was a selling point. Studios need to stop scrubbing the grain away and softening everything. It's all not supposed to look like Avatar. My Troma blu-rays are some of the best looking discs I own and also some of the most low budget.

Finally a great week of DVD releases... NOT! Thankfully, I have some catch-up to do, I just watched Mother (Madeo) last night, definitely a must watch for all Korean movie lovers.
