The Monday Corner 7/19/2010

A Priest, a Rabbi, and a Buddhist monk walk into a bar.....

They have a lovely evening, discuss theology, and agree their varying opinions are acceptable.

Don't you just love happy endings? :)

For your Consideration:
Linkage yo! No Inception Linkage. You all must die.

The lovable lug over at Sugary Cynicism is looking for a new idol with the recent decision by Sean Connery to return to cinema with the film Sir Billi. Some finalists: Helen Mirren, Jeremy Irons, & Chow Yun-Fat.

Marshall and the Movies are celebrating their one year anniversary in style: The Origins Project. With tons of bloggers from all over the web submitting stories of how they got started in the blogging world. You can find mine, here.

Everyone's favorite Mad Hatter (take that Johnny Depp) from Dark of the Matinee revisits Pixar's Cars, and wonders allowed why it's scene as the ugly duckling of the Pixar family. Well Mad I can answer that in 4 words: Larry the Cable Guy. Had to be said.

LAMB maestro Fletch from Blog Cabins tackles the damp terrain (I know, horrible pun, I am forever ashamed) of DiCaprio's true calling card: The face wash.

The Final Girl Project
takes the time to review one of the best films I've seen since blogging: The Diving Bell and the Butterfly.

Pompous Film Snob recently put together an exciting blog-a-thon, analyzing some of Tarantino's greatest characters. Including: Bill, Shoshanna Dreyfus, Jackie Brown, Marcellus Wallace, and more!

Poll Update:
Wow, mention Inception and people come running! Yeesh. Wish I could get these kind of numbers all the time.

Results:
1. 15 votes: Overhyped, and underperformed (I'll let you know when I see it)
2. 10 votes: A wondrous break (hopefully so, this year has gone 10 ways of sucking)
3. 8 votes: A solid endeavor (I admit, I suck at spelling)
4. (tie) 3 votes: Mediocre & The Single Greatest event of my lifetime (if you clicked this, I sincerely hope not, because you really fail to appreciate the finer things in life)
6. (tie) 1 vote: God awful & Nothing/Avoiding Opinion (the nothing vote gets my seal of approval - you've managed to win at life, for not getting absorbed/affected by massive craze)

New Poll: Salt's opening this week. I want to know: what's your general mood towards Angelina Jolie?

Reminder:
- A Life in Equinox Presents: The Film Enigma Gameshow premiers this Thursday, right here. It'll be roughly 30-40 minutes, so no worries about spending hours huddled in front of the computer! Look forward to hearing what you all have to think.

Have a good one everybody!

I posted my review of Inception this weekend. I thought it was the best movie of the year by far!

Thank you for no Inception linkage I'm growing more weary hearing about this film than I ever was with Avatar. Everyone and their momma "best movie of the year" "Oscar winner for sure" I think people are simply grasping at straws because this years palate has been so bland. When the hosts of At The Movies both barely recommend it and call it "Good but not great" (and they cling to any film that's "amazing"), I know most of the talk is over hype.

Thanks for the linkage! and I'm all for talking as little as possible about Inception (which is a bit hard when you're reviewing it) but the movie works better the less you know

@Alex The two big ones right now seem to be Inception and Winter's Bone. I have a feeling Inception will be more towards my visual like, while WB more towards my narrative liking. We shall see.

@MVP People love hype. The only thing people love more than hype is popular hype. Perhaps it's a sense of belonging?

@Sugary Hard to do as everyone is running over hurdles to post their Inception review.

I'm sick of Inception reviews. Not Inception, just the blasted reviews. I can only spin comments so many ways before they all start sounding the same.

I want to be following half these guys, but I've reached my 300 limit. Now I'll just start subscribing to the wordpress shit, and...

I've got too much time on my hands.

I listened to the second half of The LAMBcast on my drive back from Cincinnati this afternoon - I considered stopping the return trip to Toronto and instead going to the hometown of Jess, Sebastian, and Fletch to convince them all how wrong they were about CARS.

Thanks for the linkage amigo!

@ TheAnswer: Totally agree chief. I certainly was a very good summer blockbuster but everyone calling a "masterpiece" is really getting to me!

Yep, the backlash has truly begun! Nah, there's still a consensus it was a great, with the argument over "how great". But it's still interesting to watch.

@Simon 300? Wow. Way to go you?

@Mad You can open people's minds to a new way of perceiving a film, but you can hardly change it. Keep that in mind. Opinion is key :).

@Castor Whenever I get around to seeing it, I'll be sure to keep that in mind when reviewing.

@Darren I don't possess backlash, so much as I shy away from "general consensus on greatness" hype for summer blockbusters. Not because they don't possess the potential to be great, but rather because I usually find myself on mildly impressed.

Please reference the previous 'too much time on my hands' comment.

Uni - I was picturing you as Cuato there in your reply to Hatter. Open your mind, Quaid. Open your mind to me...
