Obligatory Weekend Movie Post #34

I'm not entirely sure why I number these. Let's be honest, you all don't care anyways. All you want to know is how many dumb remarks I can make about this weekend's releases right? Well, let's get to it!

Wide Releases:

The A-Team: They're back! Not from outer space. But most definitely with a sad look upon their face. We should have changed those locks. Thrown away the keys. For god's sake, why are they back to bother us? Hey, if they can take liberties with the cheesiness of an old show, why can't I do it with an old song? Besides, this movie will likely be entertaining, and nobody will remember it in 5 years. Welcome to TV to Film adaptations!

The Karate Kid: Who knew when you took 26 years to remake a movie you added on about 26 minutes to the runtime? Well that's not exactly true, but this 2010 remake is apparently clocking in at a shocking 2 hours and 20 minutes. My god, that's 1/5th a Sex and the City movie! I kid I kid. Let's be fair. It's gotten mediocre reviews. It's probably a mediocre movie. And if it can survive its runtime, it might just be able to sustain a lot of negative backlash. Mediocre. Defining the year 2010 so exactly.

Limited Releases:

Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work: The downside to movies with : in their title - it makes my format look incredibly stupid. *cries*. Then again, in comparison to all the facial surgery Joan Rivers has had over the years, it might just look like a masterpiece. I'm sure this will be funny. Insightful? I doubt it. Then again, when has anyone ever listened to Joan Rivers for insight? Well, disregarding fashion, which I don't think counts much anyways.

Winter's Bone: Early RT reviews are heavy thumbs up for this indie film. I haven't heard much about it, but it's most definitely peaked my interest. I'm gonna keep an eye on this one, and see how the buzz pans out.

Chanel Coco & Igor Stravinsky: Well that's a rather self explanatory title. But, really, how many Coco Chanel movies can you have in over a years time? I'm still waiting to see the Audrey Tautou one! How can I possibly go see Anna Mouglalis first! Mads Mikkelsen aside, one must have their preferences!

Univarn Recommendation: Tread lightly to the theater, maybe a rainy day outing. If possible, go indy.

That's all folks!

I saw the Rivers doc at Hot Docs this year (and who said nobody would get to see any of those flicks?).

I really don't like Joan much...sometimes she can downright grate on my nerves. However, this film is a fascinating look into her career, and likewise a peek into her everyday life.

I'd definitely recommend taking a chance on that over KARATE KID and A-TEAM.

Luckily I live near awesome theaters. I am probably going to go see Jean-Pierre Jeunet's new film Micmacs this weekend.

Winter's Bone is absolutely amazing. One of the best new films I've seen in a long time.

@ Rick... You're in for a good night at the movies with MICMACS.

@Rick, I kind of hate you now. I prolly won't be able to see that until it hits DVD

i gotta say i can't wait to check out the a-team. looks like mindless summer fun!

@Mad Yeah, I think there's quite a few of them that'll make it my way (eventually). I'll be sure to keep an eye out for some of the ones that peaked my interest.

@Rick I'm with Sugary on this one. Me = Jealous.

@Alex Yeah I've been reading a lot of good things about it. Definitely going to keep an eye out for its NC appearance (or DVD if it never makes it here)

@Candice Let me know how it is. I'm not too keen on mindless fun, but I'm in the mood for it as of late.

Surprisingly, The Karate Kid is getting a solid 65% on RT currently. It's still DVD material for me but happy to see that it's not completely hopeless after all...

I might give The A-Team a watch today, though I can't say that I am excited for it.

What I AM excited for is Winter's Bone. I can't wait for it to open here in Nebraska (in September?!?!?). Keep an eye out for Jennifer Lawrence. She's got a chance to be a great one.

I feel like checking my brain at the door and have fun with A-Team! It's pure nostalgia, with enough bomblastastic craziness to satisfy the juvenile, frivolous side of me :)

Nothing really peaking my interest for this weekend. I'll give A-Team a rent when it comes out on Blu-Ray. However, next weekend is going to be awesome (Toy Story 3 and Cyrus)!

Are you serious about waiting for the Audrey Tautou Coco Chanel film... cause... ummm... well... yeah... hmmm...

Univarn said...

@Castor it'll be interesting to see where it's at by sunday once most the reviews have come in.

@Red Oof. I hate that it takes indie films forever to get to us. Perhaps they have something against the N states?

@Dreher Toy Story 3 = can't wait.

@Brian I know it's gotten crap reviews, I just have a mad crush on Audrey Tautou... so I'm saving myself for DVD :P

A-Team looks great... don't care what anybody says.
As far as Karate Kid... first off, shoulda at least called it Kung-Fu Kid... second, has anybody seen the scene in the trailer where Jackie Chan is beating up like 4 8 year olds... it just looks wrong!

Actually I loved Coco Before Chanel. I gave it 4 1/2 stars. It's on DVD so you should check it out.

I got a feeling that both of those will suck, The A-Team and Karate Kid....but whatever, this summer just SUCKS ASS in terms of movies...what the hell happened with hollywood this summer! Geez! The recession messed with our summer movies! Arrrgh!

Just got back from Micmac and you were guys were right. It was great. Definitely check it out if you get a chance.

@Kaiderman - I haven't seen the new Karate Kid yet but I hear that they actually give a good explanation in the film for why it is called Karate Kid instead of Kung Fu Kid. I won't know until it comes out on DVD though because I am not paying theater money for they.

A-Team will probably be a rental for me too. It could be good, mindless action... but it also could be really bad.
