Great Film Songs: The Story of a Soldier
Song: The Story of a Soldier
Film: The Good, The Bad and the Ugly
Written By: Tommie Connor
Composed By: Ennio Morricone
One of the things I've always admired about great composers is their ability to make songs elevate the quality of a moment on screen. Leone's The Story of a Soldier sung by prisoners during the interrogation of Tuco scene is such a powerful cinema moment. The painful ballad beautifully captures the harshness of war, the characters involved, and reminds us of the dark nature of Angel Eyes. Whenever I hear a melody even similar to it I'm immediately thrown back into this film, and I'm all the happier for it.
