The Monday Corner 1/31/2011

Movie watched for the first time this past week:

A Matter of Life and Death (aka Stairway to Heaven in the USA)
Dodes'ka-den (Only a couple Kurosawa films remain... *cries*)
Straw Dogs (Sam Peckinpah is such an optimist)
The Lion in Winter

As always, if you want a review for a particular film feel free to ask in the comments!

For your Consideration:
If you're just scrolling to see whether or not you got linked and then hitting backspace when you realize you weren't, this is your cutoff point. Below can only lead to damnation and ruin.

Castor at Anomalous Material is gearing up the recommendations with 10 Great Movies You May Have Never Heard Of. Somehow Cody Banks 2 didn't make the list.

Films From The Supermassive Black Hole take their review of 127 Hours to the EXTREME. And by to the extreme, we mean they use it as a verb, noun, preposition, and occasionally just because they can.

Cinematic Paradox matches the scores of Inception and The Social Network head to head in a nerd-off to see which is more awesome. Spoiler Alert - only one of them wins.

What happens when you put the ever awesome Jason Soto into the blogging ring with Sound Mixing and LAMBs? Awesomeness that supersedes generic awesome on a level that can only be related by its relative awesomeness. The only comparable item on its level is when you order a six-piece chicken nugget meal and open the box and find that there are in fact eight chicken nuggets. Oh joyous days.

As the lists wind down (I'm still working on mine), Chase Kahn of The Ludovico Technique delivers his top 20 films of 2010!

Poll Update:

Well, we figured out one thing - nobody is up for more over the top technical mumbo jumbo rammed into vague philosophical ramblings that are kind of geeky but ultimately undecipherable.

Results:
1. 14 votes: Dear God, nooooooo
2. 8 votes: Double Meh (remember, there is no meh)
3. 3 votes: Awesome (optimistic bastards)
4. 2 votes: Meh (Half off sale)
5. 1 vote: Fine and Dandy (apathetic bastards)

New Poll: OMG SUPERMAN IS GOING TO BE PLAYED BY AN ALIEN!!!!! Wait... he is an alien. Sure, it's not exactly the same type of alien as Superman, but damn near close enough. To be honest, I find this shameful. Such mockery of a true blooded non-American, American icon should be punished! How do you feel?

Odd One Out Poster Challenge Results:
I can see it didn't come back with quite the same thunder as previous weeks. Oh well, got some good suggestions and of course, a winner! Simon went off the cuff and right into my heart with her fixation on some of the greatest pupils in cinematic history.

"Sorry, I couldn't hear you past the roar of Cillian Murphy's eyes."

Movie Score of the Week:
I still love this score... and film. Down with any naysayers.

Well, that's about it folks. Enjoy your Monday and Uni bless.

The poll results are interesting, but your comments are even better!

I had no idea there was a Cody Banks 2!

Also Superman is lame. Who cares.

Cody Banks made the shortlist but alas, I had to trim it down to 10 movies ;) Thanks for the link Uni!

Sebastian Gutierrez said...

YAY! Linkage! And for something that EXTREME! Much appreciated Univarn. Thanks!

Stevee Taylor said...

Wow, thanks for the link love!

And...Cillian Murphy's eyes. I watched a film last night called Peacock and he was wearing brown contacts...he looked like a different man/woman.

Simon said...

Why, thank you.

Stevee: Peacock is awesome, and he is, of course, a pretty pretty girl, but hot damn, dude, know where your audience's at.

Univarn said...

@AlexJ But of course, I work very hard (five seconds) on them

@Alex You don't know Cody Banks 2? Man, you haven't lived until that film makes you want to die.

@Castor Shame, I suppose they can't all be winners

@Sebastian Of course, we here at LiE appreciate gorged use of the word 'extreme' - mainly when spelled properly.

@Stevee No problem. Cillian Murphy has a horrible habit of doing about five hundred films nobody sees to every one major release

@Simon Your welcome
