The Monday Corner 11/29/2010

Quick, who stole my year? Where's it gone!? I swear it was here just a moment ago, now someone has come alone and taken 11/12th's of it! Unbelievable. I'm filing a formal police complaint. Congress will hear about this injustice! I swear it!

You know, for some odd reason I imagine I wouldn't be the first person to send congress a letter demanding my year back. I find that equal parts depressing and amusing.

For your Consideration:
"Linkage, you can't be serious?"
"I am, and stop calling me Linkage." (RIP Leslie Nielson)

MovieNut14 of Life of a Cinephile and Bibliophile went on the attack this past week, letting you know which actors should already have Oscars.

In what is one of the most insightful and intelligent reviews I've read, Not Just Movies tackles the 2010 shock-value film, Dogtooth.

Castor's love-hate relationship with the ever stagnant genre, Romantic Comedies, took the time at Anomalous Material to inform you of the top 3 reasons Rom-Coms suck. I can give it to you in three words: Too Much Heigl.

A special guest post over at Final Cut takes a look at the battle of sexes in The Expendables. Is Stallone capable of balancing male extremism action and appreciable feminism? Short answer: probably not.

Tom Clift of Plus Trailers has decided to turn out the lights on Plus Trailers, beginning a new blog: Movie Reviews by Tom Clift

Poll Update:
No surprises, but every vote is loved by me.

Results:
1. 11 votes: Christmas (no shocker, Die Hard ftw!)
2. 5 votes: Independence Day (lots of yelling Bill Pullman love?)
3. (tie) 1 vote: Other/Valentine's Day (Must have been able to avoid hearing about this year's latest Love, Actually ripoff)
4. 0 votes: Easter/Thanksgiving

New Poll: It seems as if ever Singer wants to be an actor/actress, and every actor/actress wants to be a singer, (must be some major elitism issues). What I want to know how do you feel about Singers turned actors/actresses. These include (lately): Justin Timberlake, Madonna, Christina Aguilera, Mariah Carey, Britney Spears, Eminem, Jessica Simpson, 50 Cent, Beyonce, Ice Cube, Jennifer Lopez, and Will Smith (to name a *cough* few)

Odd One Out Poster Contest Results:
Thanks to everyone for participating! Let me know if you enjoyed it, and I'll keep it a rolling. However there can be only one winner.

I have gathered the jury (me, myself, and I) and have debated the merits of each of your answers. I am pleased to say, we are unanimous. This week's winner is: ROBERT of His Eyes Were Watching Movies:

"I say that it's the third poster. Whereas in the other three, all of the actors's faces are cropped into their boxes, in poster 3, Julianne Moore and Annette Bening are in front of the boxes and are not limited by the lines. It just goes to show - the gods will NOT be Photoshopped!"

Soundtrack of the Week:
I'm going outside the bounds of cinema, and into the realm of miniseries. Band of Brothers has been a long standing favorite of mine, and the song Requiem for a Soldier (here sung by Katherine Jenkins) is beautiful.

Enjoy your Monday ladies and gentlemen!

I dig the new poster contest even if I didn't actually participate!

As for the new poll, all that really needs to be said is: David Bowie.

Also, Will Smith, Debbie Harry, Madonna, Iggy Pop, Jason Schwartzman, David Byrne, Elizabeth Daily, PJ Harvey... etc.

@Robert Thanks

@AlexJ You're going to have to be more specific there's lots of things listed above people may have tried.

@Alex David Bowie.... David Bowie... doesn't ring a bell. Has he done anything I might have heard of? :P

@filmgeek No problem :)

Thanks for the link although I don't comprehend how I didn't win the contest ;)

I'm with Alex the Latter. David Bowie or nothing.

Damn. I thought my answer was pretty solid, too.

This is a great blog you have here! Love how interactive you've made it, and the variety of stuff.

I'm a film maker and I have a film review blog over at http://barksonfilm.blogspot.com/. Check it out if you have time! I offer a little bit of a different slant on the reviewing phenomenon.

Peace,

Yola
