Your First....

I remember as a kid when it came to movies it was always rather simple up until I was about 12/13 years old. We would go to the local video rental store, me and my sister would pick out the "family" movie, and my parents would pick out their "parents movie." I still remember many a night in which I would lay in bed listening to the explosions, yells, dialogue, and other noises which echoed throughout our house as my parents watched their film. I was often curious about R-rated films, but very cautious when it came to violence, for the longest time I couldn't stand the site of it (now my top 100 list would argue quite near the opposite).

One day my parents decided it was time for a bit of a change. We rented Speed, a film they had seen a couple of years earlier and decided wasn't too violent, and watched it as a family. Sitting down, and watching Speed was a dual experience. I was constantly worried that extremely violent moments would happen around the corner, and at the same time I was insanely captivated by the story at hand. I vividly remember my reactions to each scene. The deaths still stick with my memory as certain characters I just didn't want to go, and wasn't used to seeing them. It's a unique experience watching your first true R film. The amount of realism, and yet absurdity, combined to present this intense product was sort of an eye opener for me in the world of film. I have to say, as first time R-Rated films go, I'm not sure any other film would capture all the new emotions I felt as vividly as Speed did.

So, out of curiosity, what was your first R-Rated film?

I remember the summer after this movie came out my friends and I watched it pretty much everyday on HBO. I'm not sure if it was my first R-rated movie but I remember that we watched it a lot.

I'm remembering POLTERGEIST as the first R rated movie I saw. Sometime later, the movie was changed to a PG. But I'm pretty sure it was still an "R" when i saw it. Which was much too young...scared the living crap out of me. Still scared of clowns and big dead trees to this day.

@Rick it was an awesome film. I've seen it countless times sense then.

@seano22 really? Well we can't all be perfect :P

@Lemmy Now that is one heck of an interesting first film. I think the first R rated film we choose plays a big part in not only our film taste, but how we view film.

we have a different system here in Australia that makes it a lot easier for kids to watch "violent" films :P - that being said, I used to live in Thailand where they don't have ANY system. So I think I saw American Psycho in theatres...when I was 8...yeah. A lot of that movie went over my head

Mine had to of been Terminator, and I was far too young to be watching it, but when my mom went to work my Dad would pop in whatever Tom Cruise, Steven Seagal, Arnie, or Sly Stallone flick he could find. I saw Lethal Weapon at an equally young age. I couldn't have been more than five or six for either.
